And now, a list of the things we think are terrible about email notifications on many web services.
- You get too much. Every photo, every post, every task, every event... Every little thing sends you an email.
- You already know about it. You already got a push notification on your phone or an alert on the site. You didn't need an email in the first place.
- You don't know how to turn them off. You eventually find the email settings on the site and it's divided up into ten sections, each with a hundred options.
To date, Trello has sent you very little email. We sent you a single email summary of unread notifications, and only after 24 hours of inactivity (meaning it has been 24 hours since you last touched the mouse in your Trello tab). It's great for people who are regularly checking the site. But, of course, not everybody interacts with Trello that way. People were missing out on important stuff, which is disastrous for a collaboration tool. You actually want -- nay, need -- that email.
So we've changed the way email notifications work on Trello, while avoiding the things we think are terrible about email notifications on many web services.
We still send you a summary of unread notifications, meaning you don't get an individual email for every single event, meaning less email. We also base the email on unread notifications, which means it's only stuff you don't know about. And it now checks 'periodically' (about every hour) instead of after 24 hours, meaning the important stuff won't get lost until the next day.
Need faster updates? We now have a single setting that allows you to check 'instantly'. If you don't want any emails, you can disable them by selecting 'never'. You can change the setting in your 'account' page here.
