Remote Office Tours: A Look Into 10 Home Setups Of Remote Workers

remote office setup examples

When your company works from an office, there are certain things that you take for granted. Your company provides you with a desk, a chair, computer, keyboard etc. This equipment is all a part of the general “work from office” setup. So what happens when you throw caution to the wind and decide to go remote? You’ve suddenly got a lot of decisions to make about your own personal office.

Even though some things will be simpler (hello, no commute!), it can be overwhelming to know where to start with home office options. But remote work is also a lot of fun in this regard, because you can create a totally personalized experience right from your home!

At Trello, more than 65% of our company works remotely all over the globe. We don’t have many official rules for working from home, but we strongly advise that a home office has a door that closes for a quiet workspace, fast internet, and the best tools for creating the best work. After all, effective time management is closely correlated with a productive environment.

Learning how other remote workers set up their home offices (and find the right software tools) can be a great way to figure out what may work best for you. Setups vary from role to role and person to person, but one thing is consistent across the board: We’ve all carved out our own spaces, and we spend a ton of time in them. Our company strongly believes that giving employees autonomy in the management of their home office will ultimately make them more productive.

Read on to see how a handful of Trellists GSD at home by customizing their space. And, as always, we’d love to hear how and where you’re Trello-ing. Share your remote office setup using the #WhereITrello hashtag on Twitter and Instagram, and we’ll send you some sweet swag.

What office gear helps you work best remotely?

  1. My Wacom tablet - It helps my arm and hand feel less fatigued than with a mouse or trackpad because I am holding a pen, which is more natural than the alternative, making designing and illustrating for long hours more enjoyable. It's a PITA to travel with, but I never work without it.
  2. Leuchtturm1917 dot grid sketchbook for notes and sketches. High quality, lays flat, and the grid keeps my sketches pristine.
  3. Webble ergonomic footrest - helps my posture and back! I never got into standing desks, so this is a great addition to my setup that I definitely miss when I work elsewhere.

When it comes to time management and remote communication, what ONE app is most vital to you as a remote worker?

Slack. It's good to see activity in the rooms I'm in so I don't feel so alone, even if I might not participate on particularly busy days. It helps with building both professional and non-professional rapport with my coworkers. Whenever it's down, it feels like I'm shut off from the rest of the world.

What are your favorite snacks to have on hand throughout the day?

I don't snack much due to my medication ruining my appetite, but when I do...I love Cheez-Its and the chili plantain chips I get from my local grocery store. If I want to pretend I'm healthy, I like having clementine mandarins around.
